Baking Cupcakes with Deryn :)

Hello followers!! Emma here!Β

So as you all know we love baking here at The Not So Perfect Housewives…any excuse for cake! Today the weather was just too hot for playing outside. I’m not one to moan about the nice weather but we have a backyard completely enclosed with no breeze coming through….so we decided to bake indoors until it cooled down outside πŸ™‚

Today’s recipe came from one of my many cupcakes books – Neapolitan cupcakes!!

You will need:

140g Self Raising Flour, 1/2 tsp Baking Powder, Β 140g Softened Butter, 140g Caster Sugar, 2 large eggs – beaten, 1tsp Vanilla Extract, 1tbsp Milk & 1tbsp Cocoa Powder (made into a paste with 1 1/2 tbsp hot water!)

I put all the ingredients out for Deryn ready for her to bake πŸ™‚ In her lovely apron πŸ™‚

Cheesy grin πŸ™‚Β

First sift the flour & baking powder into a large bowl….

Then add the butter, caster sugar and eggs….

20140622_155209

Then give them all a good mix! I used an electric mixer after Deryn had a little go herself πŸ™‚

Next is the fun bit! Split the mixture between 2 bowls – then add the vanilla extract and milk to one of the bowls and the cocoa powder paste to the other and give them both a lovely mix. You now have vanilla and chocolate cupcake mixes to use. Add your cupcake cases to the tin – Ashton chose the hearts this time πŸ™‚Β

Then add alternative scoops of each mix into the cases πŸ™‚ No need to be neat – They look fab with lots of different splodge of choc & vanilla in them!

20140622_160917

Pop them in the oven on 180 degrees (350f or Gas Mark 4) for 15-20 mins – ours were ready after 15mins as we have a fan oven but keep an eye on them.

20140622_162846

Baked and looking yummy – We let them cool down while the kids went outside to play. We were going to make up some buttercream of our own but decided to try Betty Crocker Vanilla Buttercream Icing πŸ™‚ The tub can be popped back in the fridge for up to 30 days afterwards so we can make more yummy cakes this month too! Deryn chose 4 different decorations from our crazy amount of Tesco, Asda & Dr Oetker decorations we have collected – many on offer recently from as little as 25p!Β

20140622_171206

She chose Hundreds and thousands which we popped in a bowl so she could dip the cupcakes in them, mini marshmallows, hearts & butterflies! They looked fantastic!!

So – the final verdict……

20140622_182448

Ashton gave it a sticky thumbs up….scoffed the lot πŸ™‚

20140622_183808

Deryn ate all hers….as well as Daddy who chose the biggest one for himself πŸ™‚

I love the swirly choc/vanilla mix – by far my favourite cupcake recipe to date – it was soft and moist, they lastest less than 24hrs with the 4 of us πŸ™‚ Will be making more for sure!

Princess Birthday Cake!!

Hello everyone!!

So a few weeks back IΒ added a post about the Princess birthday cake which I added a Frozen twist to ready for Deryn’s 3rd birthday…..this time round it was Kayley’s turn to make one for Iylah’s 4th birthday!!

So a few changed this time – We still used the same tutorial from Youtube but Iylah’s cake is Disney Princess themed! πŸ™‚

So for the sponge – Kayley used this RECIPE – (Which I have to admit worked better than the sponge on my cake as it was just too soft to hold up the 3 layers) Check out the pics below – I will get Kayley to add a bit of info for you all soon too πŸ™‚ How lovely does her cake look though! Iylah loved it!! πŸ™‚

Banoffee Pie…..Yes please!!

Hello!! Emma Here…..

Every now & again I have this sudden urge to bake something sweet,.Jamie (my bloke!) has the biggest appetite, one of those annoying guys who could eat en tire chocolate gateaux to himself and not put on a pound…where as I only have to look at it and my clothes feel tighter….so what do I do in these situations….message Kayley….hehe

So one day she messages me about a very yummy recipe she found online for a Clasic Banoffee pie, I love trying out new recipes and am always on the hunt for new ideas and recipes to add to my collection…reviewing food is the best as it means you have to eat yummy things first πŸ™‚

The recipe she found was this one-Β Classic Banoffee PieΒ (however there is an even easier version of it HERE if your feeling extra lazy or have last minute visitors etc hehe)

I have many old recipe books that involve time consuming ideas such as putting a tin ofΒ condensed milk in a saucepan of water to boil for 2 hours….this one is so much easier!!

classicbanoffeepie_lg

Hungry yet? Hehe Well thankfully this recipeΒ is very easy to make so you will be devouring it in no time πŸ™‚ A few ingredients are needed, more so for the Classic pie as you make your own yummy sticky filling with the Condensed Milk, Butter & Sugar….of course if you buy the ready made Β Carnation Caramel you just add it without the heating/cooling of making your own!! Fantastic for last minute visitors, invites to get-togethers where you were asked to take something with you but completely forgot and don’t want to take something shop bought…yes we have all been there!! No-one needs to know it only took you 10 minutes to chuck together…..

The link has an easy link to print the instructions too, fab for adding to your own recipe books.

So…the final verdict on this recipe….its fool proof…honestly!! Even if you are not brave enough to boil the caramel yourself, which was surprisingly easy…you can’t go wrong adding a tin of ready made caramel…unless you drop it…or have a cat…maybe some children who are tall enough to reach the counters…..haha! I added crushed maltesers onto the top of mine rather than chocolate, just for something different & i whisked the bananas into the cream rather than adding them as chunks as Jamie has issues with textures…haha……but it was delicious!!

Yummy!! Β Works out very cheap per portion..its says feeds 12…but we managed it between 2 of us over a couple of nights πŸ™‚ Carnation condensed milk is often on offer for Β£1 in supermarkets and the ready made Caramel saves you buying the sugar if you don’t have any πŸ™‚

One happy boyfriend!! Looking forward to trying out some of the other recipes from the website soon….Mini Banoffee Pies Maybe?! Banoffee Cheesecake?!….One things sure…We will upload photos and reviews as soon as its made…and eaten!!

Ashton’s 1st Birthday – Iggle Piggle Cake

Hello!! Emma here…

So I thought I would blog about the awesome Iggle Piggle cake I made for Ashton’s 1st birthday! It was in march, before Deryn’s frozen cake but it was the 1st cake I had done myself too πŸ™‚ Ashton loves In the night garden, like many 1yr olds so we had a little family party in my home for him. We bought 1st birthday decorations on ebay and I searched for a cake tutorial to help me….and found this one…

Iggle Piggle Cake TutorialΒ by Strawberry Lane Cake Company.

Her tutorial is amazing!! Step by Step photos of how to make the sponge & decorate as well as a template. I printed the complete tutorial out, My PC is in a different room and I didn’t want to keep going back & for checking what to do next & i’m old fashioned, I like recipe books πŸ™‚ So as with all my birthday cakes…I went to my mum for the sponge πŸ™‚ Once made I brought them home & followed the now printed tutorial.

The template can be downloaded free from the cbeebies website, search iggle piggle card and it comes up, I made my cake slightly larger than the one in the tutorial. It took quite a few hours but being my 1st experience trying to roll & lay the icing over the cake I was expecting it πŸ™‚

Many hours later, and a lot of photos to Kayley later….he was ready πŸ™‚

604061_1487847668104545_515611776_n

My daughter, then 2 got very excited about the Iggle Piggle cake & knew it was him straight away so I must have done well πŸ™‚

We prepared a small buffet for the family….

and put the cake pride of place on the table πŸ™‚

Now what to make for his 2nd birthday……hehe

Deryn’s Frozen Cake & Party

Hello! Emma here…

So this weeks big idea was to make Deryn’s birthday cake πŸ™‚ My mum always made my birthday cakes herself and it felt so much more personal, don’t get me wrong there are some amazing cake makers out there, but I didn’t have a large budgetΒ and I wanted Deryn to have something made by me πŸ™‚ Her 1st birthday cake was made by my mum & was Mike Wazowski…last year due to my depression she barely had a birthday…this year was going to be much different!!

So…what do i do when I fancy making something…I message my best mate…Kayley sent me a wonderful Youtube Link for a Princess Castle Cake…You can view it herePart 1 & Part 2.

Β 10352724_1506358829586762_396993451_n

Fantastic tutorial, easy to follow and the end cake looked fab…well..I think so & all my friends and family!

So first things first…go to my mum for the sponge cakes πŸ™‚ My mum makes the lovliest cakes & this way she gets to be involved in Deryn’s birthday cakes too πŸ™‚ joint effort all round. 6 sponge cakes later & they were ready to be brought home!

10409924_1508159986073313_614576616_n

Yummy bit of jam & homemade butter cream, big box of decorative bits & pieces…kids in bed…cuppa made…time to follow the lovely tutorial and get making πŸ™‚ 4 hours of decorating…lots and lots of messages to kayley and step by step photos….and this was ready πŸ™‚

10379158_1508218942734084_133132113_n

I made the cake slightly smaller than the original tutorial, used white & blues for the Frozen castle, added the characters bought on ebay & sprayed with some gorgeous shimmer spray. I added Snowflakes made from some fab stamper/cutters again bought on ebay. very cheap and easy to use, simply press into icing & then Pop them out!! A couple of flags on top and it was ready πŸ™‚

Deryn saw it first thing in the morning as it was slightly too hard to hide πŸ™‚ She loved it!!

We decorated the house in decorations including some from Free Printables online, I can send these via email to anyone who would like them πŸ™‚ Simply send your requests to thenotsoperfecthousewives@hotmail.com

10362698_1508225159400129_97636248_n

We made our own buffet up for all the guests which turned out to be 15 in all, I used coupons and special offers to get it to under Β£20 for the lot πŸ™‚

10362661_1508392062716772_1825390432_n

Plates, Table cloth & Napkins all from ebay, and lots of Peppa Pig plates from Deryn’s make & bake with Peppa Pig…we like baking in this house πŸ™‚

Fantastic day had by all πŸ™‚ We watched Frozen, Deryn played with the figures from the cake and wore her princess dress….I have been maing 2 Tutu dresses which will be uploaded soon too πŸ™‚

I love birthday parties!!
